South Carolina high school student accused of killing a classmate, allegedly for dating a man who raped a 13-year-old
South Carolina is reeling after a high school junior allegedly shot and killed a classmate because he thought he was dating a “high school boy.”
The school’s principal has confirmed that 15-year old Zachary Lee Brown shot and wounded 14-year college student Alex Williams in a home on May 14, according to ABC News affiliate WSAV.
Brown was charged with murder Monday, according the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.
Brown reportedly told investigators that he was looking forward to having sex with Williams, who is black, but when Williams came home he told him to get out.
A friend who was in the house with Williams told investigators he found a .22-caliber rifle on the floor of the home, WSAVA reported.
“I saw him go out the front door and I heard shots,” said friend Brandon Williams, according for the station.
“The next thing I know, I heard people screaming.
I saw him laying there, blood all over him.
He was laying in the backyard.”
Williams said Brown’s mother, Ashley Brown, called the police, who rushed to the scene and took Williams to a hospital.
Brown’s family has not been told of his condition, WSPAV reported.
He is now listed in stable condition, according WSPAVA.
Authorities were investigating Brown’s relationship with Williams’ girlfriend, who they believe may have helped orchestrate the attack.
“It’s heartbreaking that this young man was involved in a crime against a child, and this incident highlights the need for schools to be more vigilant and more proactive in preventing sexual violence,” said Sherrilyn Ifill, senior vice president at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Williams’ mother, who was not identified by WSAVR, told The Charleston Post and Courier that her son had been dating Williams since December.
The newspaper reported that Williams was “scared” and “disgusted” by Brown’s alleged attack, which left Williams and a friend hospitalized.
“He never said anything to me about it,” Williams’ friend Brandon, 17, told the newspaper.
“You never hear about it from him.
You never hear anything about it.
It’s just like, he’s a bad kid, and that’s all he’s ever been about.
He just doesn’t get it.
He never talks about it.”
According to the newspaper, Brown’s girlfriend was also present when the shooting occurred.
Williams was a standout football player at South Carolina, but was kicked off of the team for violating team rules.
Williams allegedly had been drinking and “had been talking about how he was going to rape someone for like two months,” the newspaper reported.
