NEW YORK — As a sophomore at Tottenville High School in New York, Eric “Eve” Bogaerts had a crush on the student body’s new coach.
So she decided to take her passion for high school to the next level, signing with an All-American team.
Bogaert, a member of the All-Star team, has been coaching girls high school basketball for more than two decades.
She started with an easy job at a junior high in the early 2000s.
Then she began recruiting girls, hoping to become a head coach.
She eventually found a coaching spot in the high school’s All-America team.
“It was like, I’m not going to let anybody go,” Bogaart said.
“I just want to get the girls to a place where they can go and work.”
After winning four state titles and six state titles in her first six years as an assistant coach, Bogaerns decided she wanted to coach girls basketball herself.
Bogarts coaching career ended in 2009 when she died of an accidental drug overdose.
But she was just one of thousands of high school coaches who came through the program.
“You just get to meet a lot of really great people,” Biegerts son, Jake, said.
Jake Bogaarty, who plays on the All Star team, says the program is a family and the coaching staff is just a team.
He said he doesn’t know how many women have been coached.
He added that the program has helped many girls find mentors.
Bagarita Sisigianakis, an assistant in the program, said she has seen the effects of the program on young women.
“The kids are so young, they have such a wide range of emotions and emotions,” Sisicianakis said.
Bogyart says the success of the girls program has made it hard for her to keep a low profile.
She said the school is proud of its students and the work they do.
“That’s just a part of being an All Star,” she said.
The program has been in use since 2000, and the school has been involved in multiple national tournaments.
Bogaervias son, Ryan, said his mother was a pioneer.
“She was the first to put on a uniform and wear it and have an impact on other women and girls,” Ryan Bogaerton said.
Ryan Bogaerdins dad, Matt, said he’s glad the program continues to exist.
“I think there are a lot more women than men in our world,” he said.
“They’re just so different.
They’re not like us.
They just want the best for themselves.
They want to do well.
I think it’s very cool to see.”
Bogaervies daughter, Madison, said the program brings so much joy to her.
“For her to be able to go to these events and see all the girls that come here and play and have fun, that’s something I’m going to cherish for the rest of my life,” Madison Bogaerts mother said.
